“Engaging with what is already felt but not yet known, with what goes beyond language, concepts, and methods, and from which new steps emerge: steps of change that are both steps of thinking and healing.” (Eugene T. Gendlin)
Focusing is a simple process developed by Eugene Gendlin to help us tap into the deep sources of knowledge within us.
Focusing is a (short) time during which you remain with a physical sensation without knowing exactly what it is. However, you sense that this feeling is connected to a certain aspect of life, even if you don’t know exactly which one. This physical sensation can arise in relation to anything, be it an idea, a situation, another person, or a problem—anything is possible. We often have different thoughts about this aspect, but at the same time, we are always accompanied by a physical sensation. This physical sensation acts as a valuable guide, called the ‘felt sense’ in focusing.
When we turn to our physical experience with an open and nonjudgmental awareness and explore it, a new sense of self-efficacy can develop in our own lives. This helps to release blockages, has a healing effect, and enables us to experience a new form of intimacy with ourselves, with others, and with life as a whole.
